Fascia is the trim board behind your gutters, where the gutter system actually attaches. Soffit is the underside of the roof overhang. What fascia and soffit are
The fascia is the flat board that runs along the edge of your roof — it's what your gutters actually attach to. The soffit is the panel tucked underneath the overhang. Together they close off the roof edge and keep water and animals out of the attic.
When old gutters leak, the fascia behind them rots, and gutters can't hold on rotten wood. We repair or replace damaged fascia and soffit, and can wrap them in aluminum for a low-maintenance finish before new gutters go up.
What fascia and soffit do
Fascia is the horizontal trim board that runs along the edge of your roof, hiding the rafter tails. It's also what your gutters attach to. When fascia rots, the gutters lose their anchor and start to pull away.
Soffit is the underside of the roof overhang, between the fascia and the wall of the house. Soffit panels often have vents that allow air to circulate into the attic, regulating temperature and moisture.
Both are usually wood (older homes) or aluminum or vinyl (newer construction and replacements).
Signs you need fascia or soffit work
Visible wood rot
Soft, dark, or crumbling spots on the fascia board, usually right behind a chronically clogged or overflowing gutter section.
Peeling or flaking paint
Trapped moisture pushes paint off the board. Often the first warning sign before rot sets in.
Gutters pulling away
If the fastener no longer has solid wood to grip, the entire gutter run sags or detaches in heavy rain or under snow.
Animal damage
Squirrels, raccoons, and woodpeckers attack soft fascia or vented soffit panels to nest in attics. Holes need patching, source needs fixing.
Sagging soffit
Saturated soffit panels droop or fall. Usually indicates a roof leak or major gutter overflow problem upstream.
Stained ceiling near eaves
Water bypassing the gutters and running back along the fascia can show up as interior staining inside the house near exterior walls.

How much does fascia replacement cost?
In South Jersey, fascia work typically runs $8 to $20 per linear foot. Aluminum wrap over sound wood is at the lower end. Full wood replacement runs higher, especially if rot has spread into the rafter tails. Pricing includes removal and disposal of the damaged material.
What causes fascia rot?
Almost always water from failing gutters. When gutters clog, overflow, or pull away from the fascia, water runs down the wood instead of into the gutter. Over years that constant moisture rots the board. Fixing the gutter without fixing the fascia just buys you a few months.
Should I wrap or replace fascia?
Wrap (cover with aluminum trim coil) if the wood is still structurally sound but the paint is failing. Replace if the wood is rotted, soft, or has lost its hold on fasteners. We assess each board individually and quote both options when applicable.
Can soffit be replaced without removing gutters?
Sometimes. If the soffit damage is localized and the gutters are in good shape, we can work around them. Larger soffit jobs or any combined fascia work usually require pulling the gutters, which is why these projects are often bundled with new gutter installation.
How long does fascia repair take?
Spot repairs and wrap jobs are typically done in one day. Full fascia replacement on the perimeter of an average home, especially combined with gutter work, is a one to two day project. We coordinate to minimize the number of crew visits.
