The seven-point inspection
1 Pitch
Does water flow toward the downspouts? Standing water means the gutter is pitched wrong or the hangers have shifted.
2 Fasteners & hangers
Are the hangers tight and properly spaced? Loose fasteners are the first sign of imminent sagging.
3 Downspout flow
Run water through each downspout. Confirm full flow at the discharge end and check for hidden clogs.
4 Seams & corners
Inspect every joint, miter, and seam for sealant failure, hairline cracks, and active drips.
5 End caps
End caps pop off in windstorms more often than people realize. Quick visual check.
6 Fascia condition
Probe for rot, look for peeling paint, check that the gutter is still anchored to sound wood.
7 Grading at discharge
Does the downspout discharge route water away from the foundation, or right at it?
